High Swinside Cottage
High Swinside Cottage was built onto the Farmhouse in the 1800's as a farm workers cottage. Downstairs there is an entrance hall, then a snug living room with a log burner that leads through to the kitchen at the front of the house. Upstairs you'll find the family bathroom and 3 bedrooms: a spacious ensuite double, a 2nd bedroom that can be arranged as a twin or a double, and a single bedroom. The kitchen and one of the bedrooms look towards the Lorton valley, while the rest of the rooms look towards Swinside fell behind the house or have a dramatic view of the Dodd, Whiteside and the ridge leading to Howgill Head. Entrance & Entrance Hall
Inside the front door of High Swinside Cottage there is a small entrance hall with bench, coat hooks, and a boot rack.

Beyond there is a large under-stairs storage cupboard before you enter through another door into the sitting room.
Living Room
This snug living room has a comfy sofa and arm chairs, and a red brick fireplace with a log burner.

Beside the fireplace you will find a basket of logs when you arrive. More are available in the log store behind the cottage.

Television & DVD, books, plenty of games, maps of the area, and a writing desk complete the picture.
Good Wifi Throughout the Cottage
A wifi booster ensures good reception throughout the cottage. The living room leads past the stairs into the kitchen...
Kitchen
The kitchen benefits from velux roof lights and is bright and airy.

It has a dining area with table and chairs, and is well equipped for family catering with electric cooker, microwave, and fridge. (There are laundry facilities and a large chest freezer in the basement under Little Swinside for all guests to use, accessible from the exterior).

(The night storage heaters you might see in some of these photos have now been replaced by central heating throughout the cottage).

Additional facilities available
In addition to these facilities there is also a laundry with washing machine and if need be a tumbler dryer, and a large chest freezer in the basement under Little Swinside for all guests to use (accessible from the exterior).

Upstairs the main double bedroom has an attractive oak beamed ceiling and from the south facing window there is a striking view towards the Grasmoor fells - specifically the Dodd, Whiteside and the ridge leading to Howgill Head.

The family bathroom has toilet, basin and bath with handheld shower attachment for hair washing.
Single Bedroom
The third bedroom has a single bed and faces south at the front of the house. The airing cupboard housing the hot water cylinder is accessed from this bedroom.

Panoramic views from the garden
The garden is shared with the Farmhouse and smaller cottage. It has a picnic table and benches for enjoying the view, and gated access onto the open fells with wonderful walks right on your doorstep.

This photo looks south west down the Lorton Valley towards the Loweswater fells. Further around to the south there is a striking view of Melbreak which overlooks Crummock Water. Across the valley to the west lies Low Fell, while to the north you look beyond Fellbarrow to the Solway Firth and the misty Scottish mountains.
Dog friendly - and lane to village
The garden has an enclosed wooded area where dogs are free to roam safely (to the right in this photo).

In the lower garden there are free range hens - and when they are laying there may be eggs available.

Through a second gate a green lane leads in 20 minutes into High Lorton village with its 1000 year old yew tree and friendly village shop.

The Wheatsheaf pub in Low Lorton - a further 5 minutes walk - is dog friendly and serves a very good menu!
Hot Tub with a view!
There are two hot tubs available at High Swinside. Both are spring-fed and wood-fired. One of them will very soon have the option of being heated by solar panels.

The two hot tubs are discreetly separate from each other, and cannot be viewed from the cottages, but they have the best of the view!

High Swinside Cottage has central heating with radiators in all rooms. The water is heated by immersion heater.

High Swinside Cottage Booking Information

Hi - welcome! You'll find the High Swinside Cottage calendar below. If a date is in blue, it's booked. All other dates are available and the colours tell you the prices at different times of year.

You can arrive any day of the week except in school holidays when bookings are Sat to Sat for a minimum of 7 nights. Outside school holidays there is a minimum stay of 3 nights arriving whichever day of the week suits you.
